Joseph Bell

Professor Joseph Bell was born on the December 2, 1837 in Edinburgh. He was a famous pioneer in forensic pathology. Bell was a fan of learning  and couldn’t get enough of information. He loved every book he read and absorbed information. He was also a famous Scottish lecturer at the medical school of the University of Edinburgh. Professor Bells child was Benjamin Bell, who later became a famous forensic surgeon. Ben Bell also took after hes father and also loved to learn. Joseph Bell became the third most influential person in forensic science He was  best known for his inspiration for the character Sherlock Holmes. Bell also was very interested in the murders of Jack the ripper. Bell analysed all of Jacks victims and came to the conclusion of who jack the ripper was. The ripper was Robert Mann. Bell was highly appreciated for this discovery. Sadly, Bell died on 4 October 1911. He was buried at the Dean Cemetery.

My summaries on the body system projects

During term two we split into teams of three and each did

NERVOUS SYSTEM

The central nervous system is made of the spine and the brain. The communication from your feelings and emotions travel round the body at 800 ks per hour to get from the nerves to the brain.

Your left side of the brain controls the right side of your body whilst the right side of the brain controls the left side of your body. Your left side of the brain is better at reading and writing whilst your right side of your brain is better at the arts and music.

IMMUNE SYSTEM

The immune system needs to be protected so it can be unstoppable against viruses, bacteria and germs. Ways to keep your immune system protected is to try and have a low-fat diet, get heaps of vitamin A, try to keep stress levels low and get decent sleep.

having allergies is when you have an allergic reaction and your immune system over reacts and you start sneezing, getting itchy eyes and a runny nose. Without your immune system you could die from a common cold.

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

The lymphatic system is made of lymph nodes, the spleen, the chyli, the tonsils and the venous. The lymphatic system was discovered by Tomas Barthloin in 1652. Sadly, Tomas died in 1680.

You can care for your lymphatic system by meditating, doing yoga, moving around a lot and eating healthily. If we didn’t have the lymphatic system we could die from a common cold.

URINARY SYSTEM

The urinary system is made up of the two kidneys, the ureter, the bladder, the sphinder, and the urethra. The urinary system was discovered by Andeas Vesaliaus. Kidney cancer is a big problem and smokers have a higher risk of developing kidney cancer. Symptoms of kidney cancer are blood in your urine, swelling ankles, sore back, constant reoccurring fever and unexplained sweating.

Another problem is kidney stones which is when you have eaten to much salt and the salt starts to crystallise and form a crystal in your bladder and the only ways of getting them out is through weeing them out or having them surgically taken out.

SKELETAL SYSTEM

The skeletal system is made up of bones. The skeletal system was discovered over time by many, many different people. Leonardo Da Vinci was the only person to draw the most precise diagrams of the skeletal system.

Bones are able to get diseases and break. some types of fractures are a transverse fracture, oblique fractures, spiral fractures and communed fractures. If we didn’t have bones we would be a puddle of jelly and we would eventually die.

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

The circulatory system is made up of the heart, blood, veins, capillaries and arteries. There are two sides to your heart, the left and right sides. The left side sends oxygen around the body whilst the right side sends de-oxygenated blood to the lungs to be exhaled.

Bruises are a swelling of blood when you have hit them. There are five stages of a bruise. The first stage the bruise is usually red because of swelling blood. The second stage is usually when the bruise turns blueish or blackish. The third stage is when the bruise turns a sickly greenish colour. The forth stage is when the bruise turns a brownish colour. The final stage is when after a few more weeks, the bruise slowly dissapears.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

The respiratory system is made up of the mouth, the nose, the trachea, the lungs and the diaframe. Mr Hooke was the first person to to figure out that the lungs acted like a pump.

To care for the respiratory system you need to make sure that if you have asthma not to run to often but do run, if you have lung cancer don’t smoke at all and visit your local doctor, if you have emphysema don’t breathe or smoke tobacco and also visit your local doctor.

Term Three Project Proposal

Who’s the Explorer: (Professor David Craig: Australian chemical scientist)

Why this explorer:  We chose this explorer because we have advantages in chemistry because of Gavan’s cousin who is a chemical scientist. We think this is an advantage because we could get some experiments from him.

Team Members and Jobs: Alex, Luca and Gavan Alex.: I will be doing the liquids and the elements which chemical reactions need. Luca: Luca will be searching the explorer and will be presenting his research. Gavan: Gavan will be working on the experiment in the lab and helping with the making of the video.

Why we chose this group: I think our particular team will work really well because we all get our work on time we all are interested in the topic and we all are focused in what we need to do and what we can take further for the best results.

Presentation Format: We are going to do an experiment on the chemistry that (Professor David Craig) mostly done in the science room and a black and white video on what he discovered.

Term 2 Project Reflection

Three facts I found interesting and surprising:

  • That the muscular system has 650 muscles and 187 joints!
  • That there are muscles in our hair follicles!
  • That they are making bionic artificial muscles for the human body!

Two understandings I now have:

  • I understand how pelvic floor muscle disorder makes your bladder swell and tighten.
  • I understand how the muscles help support the bones.

One wondering I still have is:

  • What understandings did scientists have about the muscular system in the olden days.

What were the most important things I learnt?

  • Taking the notes: I learnt that during a presentation you can’t get everything they say so only get the key words. Because some people talk fast they might not be able to catch everything they say so you have to write the important things down that matter and use the notes to put them into your own words.

How did I learn it?

  • I realised that you can’t ever copy down things that everyone is saying word for word so you have to take notes and fill in the gaps later.

What am I going to do with what I have learnt?

  •  When I go into high school I will use the skills I have learnt here in high school.

Nervous system

Predict: I predict this is going to give a detailed description of the brain and the nervous system and how they work.

Read: To read click here and here

Clarify: Nothing to clarify because all of the words were explained.

Questionings:

  • What happens if the spinal cord snaps?
  • How can brain damage effect the human body?
  • What would happen without the nervous system?

Summary: The brain helps us think, feel, see and taste. it is protected by a hard bone called skull. The messages being sent from our brain are sent from our eyes, skin, ears, nose and tongue. These messages give you different feelings such as fear, anger, sadness, surprise, jealousy and love. The brain is like a highway that sends and receives information from the spinal cord through nerve impulses.

There are five main parts of the brain and they are the cerebrum, cerebellum, the brain stem, the pituitary and the hypothalamus. The brain gets information about changes and this triggers our emotions. An example is if you were playing and having fun you might smile or laugh.

Canberra Camp

From the 26th – 30th November, the Year 5/6 went to Canberra Camp!

Monday 26th November

On Monday, we had to be at school by 7am. We put our luggage on and got on the bus at 7.30am and left for Canberra. We hopped off the bus at Holbrook to have morning tea and a bit of a chat with our friends. Then we hopped back on the bus and kept going for Canberra.

For lunch we stopped off at “Dog on the Tuckerbox” which is in Gundagai. The story behind Dog on the Tuckerbox is, when a man goes hunting, he leaves his dog on the tuckerbox to guard his lunch until his master comes back. A sad story of this happening is when one man left his dog on the tuckerbox and he went hunting. He didn’t return and the dog sat on the tuckerbox until he died.

After lunch, we hopped back on the bus and watched two movies on the way to Canberra.  They were, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Happy Feet 2. Finally we got to Canberra at Greenhill’s Conference Centre. We got our luggage off the bus, and waited to see who was in our cabins.  I was in a cabin C11 with Jack McLeod, Alex Craven, Albert Rolfe, Lachlan James and Liam Brown. That night we settled in to our cabins before dinner. For dinner we had schnitzels with carrots and corn and for dessert we had cheese cake.  After that, we played outside for a bit until it was time to go back to our cabins and get ready for bed.

Tuesday 27th November

On Tuesday we went to have breakfast in the dining hall and we had cereal and a hot breakfast made for us.  After breakfast, we made our own rolls to have for lunch and got ready to leave to go to New Parliament House.

At New Parliament House, we saw The House of Representatives and the Senate.  We had a tour guide take us in to a room where we did a role play of a bill being passed. (A Bill is a developing law). I got to be the Prime Minister in the role play and my team (government) got to make this bill, “Ads should be banned on children’s programs” a law. Then we went to old Parliament House and we had to wear white gloves because most of the stuff in old Parliament House was really old and delicate and they didn’t want anything to break. We went into a room where they have interactive touch screens and we played a game about the Prime Ministers where you have to guess the correct dates and how long they were in office for. After that we went in to the House of Representatives (old one) and we saw the old chair that was used by some of the oldest speakers, like, Littleton Bloom. We had a role play and David Nguyen got dressed up as Littleton Bloom. After this, we went to Mount Ainslie and saw most of Canberra up there. After that we had lunch at the War memorial drive and then went to the war memorial.

At the War Memorial, we saw all the weapons that were used in war during WW1 and WW2.  We also saw one of the deadliest weapons they used in WW1, mustard gas.  Mustard gas burned your eyes, lips and skin. Mustard gas could be breathed in and infected your lungs.  Most soldiers died from being gassed. Even after the war, the two sides agreed that they would never ever use the mustard gas again in any other war. We went back to Greenhill’s and got ready for dinner. We had a dinner of Hamburgers and Chips. After dinner we went to the AIS to go swimming. After the swimming, we got back to Greenhills and we settled in for bed.

Wednesday 28th November

On Wednesday we woke up and had breakfast. After breakfast we went to the AIS and went in to Sportex. Sportex was an interactive area where you got to play a lot of different sports such as, skeleton, sprinting, skiing and canoeing, just to name a few. We went for a tour around AIS, we saw an old basketball gym that was big enough to have 6 tennis courts fit in to it. We went to see the swimming area, where the athletes train for swimming.  After that, we went in to the area where there was weightlifting, sprinting tracks and treadmills for the athletes to work on. We went in to the gym and saw some of the Australian gymnastics people training for the next Olympics. We went back to Greenhills to have dinner. Sadly, I wasn’t feeling well and had to go to bed early. I missed out on Black Mountain Tower. I played a bit of basketball and had a chat to Mrs. Hall about next year’s camp.

Thursday 29th November

On Thursday, we woke up to have breakfast and we went to the Sound and Film Archive. We got to see some of the oldest films that were more than 100 years old. Then we went downstairs to use the interactive things that they had. These included things like, make your own sounds, be the projectionist and musical instruments such as ukuleles, maracas and tambourines.

After the sound and film archive we went to Questacon, a hands on interactive science museum. In some of the rooms, there was an earthquake house where you stood in a room and you felt what a .5 on the Richter scale earthquake felt like. There was also a caged lightning strike and that was really awesome. There was another thing called a ‘free fall’, where you put overalls on, took off your shoes and walked upstairs to the 4 metre drop. That was really cool!  At the Questacon shop, I bought a giant Slinky, a propeller hat and magic putty.

We went back to Greenhill’s and got ready for dinner again. We had sausages and vegetables for dinner and had chocolate mousse for desert.

After that we had our DISCO! One of the funniest moments at the disco was seeing Jack McLeod do nose to nose in the couples dance at the disco.

Friday 29th November

On Friday, we woke up and had breakfast really early. Then we got all our gear packed on the bus ready to go at 7.30am. We made our own lunch and we hopped on the bus to go back home. We had a lunch stop at Glenrowan where Ned Kelly had his last stand. Glenrowan felt like a ghost town. You didn’t see many people and there weren’t many people on the streets.  Then we got back on the bus and kept heading home to Melbourne.

We got home, back to Melbourne and everybody was relieved. Everybody was tired and I couldn’t wait to go to bed. I cannot wait until next year’s camp and I am looking forward to it.
