100WC week 9

“Mum!! What’s the weather?” ”Go outside and check yourself!” “Okay” as I went outside I saw it was going to be a great day but boy how I was wrong… I was walking to school as it suddenly got as cold as the arctic  then, I felt myself lift into the air and I suddenly realized I was being sucked into a tornado! The violent storm was ripping me apart limb by limb. I screamed “help, help!!” and the weather stopped being cold. I was still dangling in the air. Then I saw what the storm was. The school bullies!!!

Forensic Science: Newspaper Article

In room 19, on what should have been an ordinary school day at Moonee Ponds Primary School, a crime was committed. A small, but long giraffe tail has been snipped open. We have been given a list of suspects and it has been narrowed it down to a teacher or a tall student. No one knows which teacher or student has committed it but evidence has been collected. This is what the owner of the tail, Lee P has to exclaim:

“I am very, very angry about this and also disappointed that someone in the school would do this to me. I have no enemies amongst the teachers”. Lee also stated that he believed that this crime was deliberate because of this exact writing on the whiteboard: “CAN YOU JUST GET ALL YOUR PAPERWORK IN ORDER ALREADY! THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO PEOPLE WHO ARE DISORGANISED! 🙁” If it wasn’t for this writing, Lee believed he would have jumped to the conclusion that this crime was a random act.

The crime scene was covered in evidence including a cut giraffe tail, fluff on the floor, scissors on the floor, a biscuit wrapper on the floor, an envelope with a foot print on it, addressed to Jess, another teacher and the door was locked.

This is an ongoing investigation that we hope will be solved soon, but till then, this is a crime scene, and the crime will be solved.

International Day of the Girl

Today is the international day of the girl. International day of the girl is a day where girls are to feel special. They have this day because 31 million girls across the world don’t get the chance to go to primary school and 34 million girls don’t get the chance to go to secondary school. 140 million girls across the world are even forced out of education to get married at the age of 15.

In some countries 50% of girls don’t get the chance of education at all. Other countries girls the same age as us are forced into factories to make shoes that you could be wearing right now or t-shirts that you have in your wardrobe. This is disgraceful and in 2011, 56 million children were helped by a group called plan.

This makes me feel sad because boys are favored because boys get more opportunities to have educations whilst girls have to slave away or get married at the age of 15. This is a link to the website for the group called plan who are making a change: http://www.plan.org.au/

Project reflections term 3

In term 3 all three classes did projects on Australian explorers who worked in the field of medical, scientific or human rights. Here is my reflection on the projects:

Three things I found interesting or surprising:

  • One thing i found surprising was in the 6 weeks we had to do these projects, only two groups did plays out of 11 groups. I found this interesting because in the amount of time we had, they probably worked their guts up trying to finish their plays which I found entertaining.
  • Another thing I found interesting was the amount of different things people did. What I mean is that some groups did quizzes and handed out lollies but weren’t funny, whilst others made it more humorous
  • One more thing I found interesting was the different ways the projects were displayed, because my group made hand-outs of our running sheet whilst other groups just told us at the start what they were going to be talking about.

Two understandings I have:

  • An understanding I have now is that the more research you do the more entertaining and the more information you can put in your presentation. Because when you add more the more the listeners put in their notes, and the more notes they have the better their summary will be.
  • Another understanding I have is that when you present, you have to use palm sized cue-cards and practice a lot so you don’t need to read off your cue-cards.

One wondering I still have:

  • One wondering I still have is how could I improve my project if I had the chance?

5 Cent Frenzy- infographs

Infographs

Q: What is an infographic?

A: A visual image of data.

As a part of our 5C frenzy work we created infographs to create interesting and colourful ways to present our data. There are many online sites the let you create these graphs we used infogr.am

Some of the problems we encountered along the way were being not very experienced with the program so it took a bit of time to get used to.

What we did to over come these were just giving up and starting again.

What worked with our info graphs was the easiness of it because when you entered data in it was just like excel.

What I can improve upon is trying to get all of the graphs done in time.

Below are my graphs

My Holiday Reflection

One thing I learnt on the holiday was about the Eureka Skydeck. I learnt that there are eighty-eight floors to the skydeck and it takes 30 seconds to get from the ground floor to the eighty-eighth floor. I also learnt that the elevator went as fast as four meters up per second which makes your ears pop!

Another thing I learnt was how to do was make a tri-pod and a clothes line out of bush material. I can use the tri-pod to hold wash basins up or put it over a fire and cook food. I can use the clothes line to hang up wet clothes to dry hence the name “clothes line.”

I also talked to a fellow classmate about what he learnt and he said:

When I was playing a board game with my parents and I learnt that when you put money into your bank account, you get interest. Interest is when you put money in the bank and depending on how much money you have, the bank gives you 10% of how much money you have on top of the money you already have.

Historical Fiction

“Ok kids, Grandpas going to tell a story before bedtime”

“Yay!! Story time! I love story time”

“As I look back on my twilight years, I have decided to tell a story before it is lost…” It all began when I was about your age… I was walking through Osaka st when I heard this big bang and everything around me started to crumble, I could hear my mother screaming and… And … It’s too sad to go on. “Please grandpa, please!!! We really want to hear what happened!!”

“Fine, fine I’ll go on… I was running like crazy, not knowing where to go and then, then I saw a bombed shelter with crumbling bricks and exploded wood and some of the wood was still on fire. “Wow, wow!” “Go on, go on!!” I decided to make a home in the rubble out of the broken bricks and wood. I also enclosed a small fire to keep me warm at night. It was very dangerous, because the bricks weren’t full bricks and the wood was very hot.

I waited till I was too tired to wait and fell asleep. The next morning I woke up and as I was getting ready to leave for Nagasaki, I saw a little boy waking up as well. He got a bit scared of me, but he eventually came over and we told each other our names. “Now, if I remember correctly his name was… hmm … Ahha! His name was Yapolos and he said his parents died in under the rubble from the explosion. He was coughing really badly and to me it seemed as he had breathed in the rubble’s smoke too much.

I took him with me as I made my way from Hiroshima to Nagasaki because I wanted to have company really bad. When we got to Nagasaki I was filled with relief that at least Nagasaki wasn’t bombed. We started to get hungry so we begged and stole food. “You stole food grandpa?!” “Yes and it was wrong but I wouldn’t be alive if I didn’t steal… Now, as I was saying…” Once we had enough food we found an empty house and slept there.

That night it was really hard to sleep because Yapolos wouldn’t stop coughing and his cough kept on getting worse and worse. Eventually, I fell asleep but I only slept for a while because we were woken up by the sound of an explosion and crumbling buildings. We both got up and I ran out of the door, only just realizing that Yapolos was still inside the building. I screamed at him, trying to tell him to get out of the building but he didn’t hear me over the sound of his cough and the crumbling buildings.

Once the building had collapsed I ran up and dug through the bricks to try and find Yapolos. I dug and looked and dug and looked for what felt like an hour but I never found him. At that point I started to weep then moved into the crying stage. I walked along the road, crying my eyes out and then I saw two people. They didn’t look Japanese or German to me but they still walked up to me and took me away.

When I was released I was taken to a room with two people sitting at a desk. They started to talk in a language I didn’t understand, but I caught a few of the words like ‘ Family and home’ and when I answered the weird men in German they whisked me away and put me on a boat. When we arrived I realized I was in Germany again. I was then asked by Germans where I lived and I said “Watalet st”

When they took me home I was so glad to be reunited with my family that I never wanted to let go of them. They told me how worried they were for me and I said I would never leave them like that ever again… “That’s the end kiddies, time for bed” “Ohhhh, Ok goodnight grandpa.” “Goodnight kids…”

Problem Pictures: Egg Timer

Predict: I predict this is about the egg timer and how long it takes for the sand to reach the bottom a certain number of times.

Read: http://www.problempictures.co.uk/examples/op12.htm

Clarify: nothing to clarify

What’s the BIG Question: How do you make 6 minutes on the egg timer? Does the order matter if you want to time seven minutes using a 3 and 4 minute timer? Can you time 30 seconds?

Strategies: “Test all possibilities”

Solving Procedure: To work out the first problem I thought that you have to turn the timer over twice, making sure you watch the 3 minute timer each time. 3 plus 3 equals 6 so that’s how you answer the first question. For the second question I worked out that it does matter if you want to make 7 minutes and your using 3 minutes and 4 minutes. It matters because if you did 3 minutes first it would finish before the 4 minute  timer, so you have to do the 4 minute timer first then the 3 minute one. For third question it is possible to make 2 minutes. I worked this out because when you turn it over you watch the 5 minute timer and the 3 minute one, when the 3 minute runs out there would be 2 minutes left in the 5 minute timer so that’s how you do it. For the last question we got the answer of NO, because we tested all possibilities.

Summary: In the end my prediction was correct and we got answers to all the questions! I also used my predicted strategy (“Test all possibilities).
